Флобер о демократии

Разбирал бумаги и нашел вот это, записанное на обороте чека из Reckless Records:
The entire dream of democracy is to raise the proletariat to the level of bourgeois stupidity.
-- Gustave Flaubert

Извините, а в какой связи состоит Хомский с Флобером? Он его научил плохому?

It was an off, of course. Presently I could not say anything about Flaubert, so it was wild digression.

Although, on the second thought, both are (were) equally clear and cynical thinkers, especially on behalf of there time and mores.

I'm afraid one can't call Chomsky a clear thinker -- his concern is much more with effects than causes. Not that Flaubert was a sociological and phylosophical genius.

One always judges the clarity of another one's thought within the limits put by that of one's own. (That's about me)

Besides, you say 'clear' but mean 'deep'. 'Clear thinking' to me is an ability to take a phenomenon and serve it to the public in a well articulated way. To think of it, I would hardly expect a phylosophical genius from an immediatelly influential author.
