Yeah, i was considering posting about it too ;)
There was a story on NPR once (fictional -- Daniel Pinkwater's?) about a boy whose mother was a president of the tiny little country they lived in. The poor guy was forced to play soccer because there were only 1o other eligible men in the country, and if he wouldn't play there would be no team.

They always lost to Lichtenstein, AFAIKR :)

Pretty much along the same lines as the article.
