Andre Fougeron wants to make a great hit with his presentation of the Atlantic Civilization at the Salon d'Automne. The painting
has in its center an enormous Cadillac, the symbol of Yankee capitalism. In the Cadillac is a German soldier with an SS helmet, an allegory of the "reactionary" alliance between America, the "imperialist power that oppresses the peoples of the world," with a "revanchist" Germany populated by Nazis. Around the center is exploitation of the people: a couple of poor old people, children playing among the noxious fumes of industrial plants, a mother and child without a roof over their heads, coffins containing the corpses of young soldiers killed in "dirty" colonial wars, an electric chair, a disgusting capitalist, a depraved alcoholic immersed in a pornographic magazine... In a word, all the corruption of diabolic America and its Western allies. Fougeron is in the direct line of official Soviet painters. One is horrified looking at the picture. Not by its subject, but by the painting itself.
