Интересная эмблема на могиле Лонгфелло (Mt Auburn):



Слова "dux, lux, lex, rex" (leader, light, law, lord) расположены на кресте таким образом, что их общая буква "x" оказывается в точке пересечения перекладин креста, а сам крест это тоже "x". Крест ("x") служит одновременно центром и общим контекстом.

Подобному "осевому" принципу следует изображение дзен-буддистского изречения "Ware Tada Shiru Taru" на японских каменных чашах для воды:

Ware Tada Shiru Taru. This inscription is found often ... on water basins in Japan. This is a Zen saying that can also be interpreted as: "If you learn to be content, you are rich in spirit!" This inscription is found especially on coin-shaped stone basins (Zenigata Tsukubai) in Japanese tea gardens.

Вы случайно не в курсе, имеет ли эта эмблема отношение к реальным эмблемам Г. Лонгфелло (в смысле были ли они у него и какие)?

Я, к сожалению, не в курсе. Похоже, эта эмблема является частью христианской символики 19-го века.

The story is that this Roman officer lost his wife who had been the guide and inspiration of his life. He felt the light of his life had been extinguished.

Restless and distraught, he wandered this way and that. Then he heard the Glad Tidings of the Christian Gospel and found in the catacombs this prayer inscribed on the wall. He accepted Christ and made the prayer the Rule of his life. The light of Christ shone into his life with healing and integration. He lived a long and useful life thereafter.
